About Mercy Ships

OUR MISSION
Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978.  Following the example of Jesus, Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the poor, mobilizing people and resources worldwide.

OUR VISION
Mercy Ships seeks to become the face of love in action, bringing hope and healing to the poor.

OUR VALUES
Desiring to follow the example of Jesus, we seek to:
1. Love God.
2. Love and serve others.
3. Be people of integrity.
4. Be people of excellence in all we say and do.

WHO ARE WE?
While in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1977, Don Stephens initiated the process that led to the founding of Mercy Ships.  Don formed and led a team that surveyed suitable ocean liners to fulfill the dream of a Mercy Ship to serve the world's poor.  On October 5, 1978, the dream became a reality with the purchase of the Italian liner Victoria for $1,000,000.  Rechristened as the Anastasis, this ship became the first hospital ship of the fleet, bringing hope and healing to the forgotten poor for another 29 years.  Don and his wife, Deyon, lived onboard for 10 years, rearing their family of four children.  The book Ships of Mercy details the remarkable journey.

It Is A Simple Idea
Making a lasting difference on an ocean of need

Mercy Ships began as a simple idea: a floating hospital staffed by skilled volunteer professionals providing free world-class medical care to the forgotten poor.

Since then, your prayers and support have enabled Mercy Ships to make a lasting difference in an ocean of need. More than 1.7 million people who were blind, now can see . . . who were crippled, now can walk . . . who suffered grievous deformities and diseases, now are healed.

As we enter the final half of our 2008 Liberia mission, I can gratefully report that your gifts have helped us help thousands more.  You just met a few of them in this newsletter:

Two little boys born with feet so twisted they might have ended up walking with their toes pointed backwards.  Your mercy spared these precious children of that fate.
Women who were once cursed and abandoned are now free of the shame--and wearing colorful new dresses to celebrate their new lives . . . thanks to your mercy.
A blind child who was more likely to die than reach adulthood, and a child with a cleft-palate who might have starved to death.  You heard their cries and had mercy.

But so many more wait, praying for relief.

Mercy. It Is A Simple Idea.  You are the key.

As you thoughtfully consider your continued support for Mercy Ships during the second half of our Liberia mission, please remember--your gift enables us to follow the example of Jesus and seek out the forgotten poor, to provide them with much needed help, love, and respect.
