Routine Maintenance
No one questions the importance of routine car maintenance. When I wait too long to change the oil and filters or check the brakes, I risk paying a heavy price. Yet, I currently have a car overdue for routine maintenance. How can that be? Why would I risk significant damage to a high price object?
The issue of maintenance applies to many areas of life. I would not neglect my own body, would I? I am currently overdue for my dental check up. Why would I risk my dental health?
When considering relationships, I am currently overdue for quality time away, alone with my wife. Why would I risk that precious relationship?
What about my spiritual life? I am overdue for my regular spiritual retreat with two of my friends. Why would I do that?
Maintenance -- it seems to be screaming from every area of my life. This week I need to take my car in for service. More importantly, I need to seriously consider maintaining the treasures of life. How about you? As we strive, let us remember the words of the psalmist, "Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths: guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." (Psalm 25:4-5) |
