. . . on Transforming Tragedy to Support

From the tragic abduction and murder of Dru Sjodin (North Dakota), then a senior, her chapter sisters and University have created a scholarship to keep her memory alive. In 2003, Dru was a senior graphic arts major who managed her academics, two part-time jobs, and active participation in her chapter. Ironically, she was particularly involved in projects supporting women's safety and violence prevention.

The Dru Sjodin Sisterhood Scholarship was started by Alpha Beta members and a challenge gift from the University of North Dakota Foundation. This Gamma Phi Beta scholarship has four more years to become fully funded.

Melissa Mortinson
The first recipient is Melissa Mortinson, an elementary education major and chapter officer who enjoyed chapter life with Dru. Melissa truly exemplifies the volunteerism, sisterhood and scholarship that Dru cherished. "As her sister through Gamma Phi, I feel so blessed to receive this scholarship. She has had a large influence on my life," Melissa said.

The generosity of Gamma Phi Beta members and friends has transformed the tragedy of Dru's death into something hopeful, positive and enduring. Through the Dru Sjodin Sisterhood Scholarship, Dru will remain alive in the memories of her Gamma Phi Beta sisters and at the University of North Dakota.
