Spring ’08
Events: Something for Everyone
"Car
People for Education", held on May 31st
in the parking lots adjacent to the El Segundo
Automobile Driving Museum, was the ESEF's first-ever
Car Show. The event was open to the public
and included museum access on the day of the
show. Car owners had the opportunity to enter
their antique, classic, and special interest
cars in one of several categories to vie for
a first or second place award. Special awards
were also given for Best of Show and the People's
Choice.

This
fun and educational Saturday activity wasn't
just for car buffs. The community showed up
to enjoy the vehicles on display including
surf wagons, sports cars, pure stock cars and
trucks, custom, classic, vintage, hot rods,
and motorcycles. Students from the high school's
AVID program (see
related article) served as volunteers for the
Car Show along with ESEF board members, community
volunteers, and Automobile Driving Museum volunteers.
Since
its opening in 2002, the museum has become
one of the |
|
| city's
main attractions, housing a multimillion-dollar
collection of automobiles dating back to 1904.
But they aren't all just for show. Once a week
on Sundays, the museum selects a few cars to
take out for a spin. Visitors have the chance
to ride in one of the cars,
which in any other museum would be off limits.
For some it's a trip down memory
lane and for others it's a first
exposure to the look,
feel, and ride of a little bit of American
history. |
"Strokes
of Genius" Golf Tournament

The annual "Strokes of Genius" Golf Tournament teed
off on Friday, May 9th with over 130 golfers on a day that was complemented by
cool, overcast weather. The Laker Girls were on hand for check in, handing out
goody bags for every participant including fresh baked chocolate chip cookies,
sunscreen, golf balls, and a golf towel. Participants enjoyed lunch
together and a few even had time

Corporate Partners, and golf participants who
made the day a huge success.
Hundreds of donors and friends attended GivElSegundo, the Foundation's
biennial event, in February at McCormick & Schmick's. Guests enjoyed a culinary
feast of seafood, salads, pastas,
beverages, and more, while
lingering among the silent auction tables.
One of the sought after raffle prizes was a
British Columbia cruise, won by our very
own Jayne Pimlott. The Foundation
