It's All For The Kids

What do we mean when we say, "It's all for the kids!"

We mean your gifts matter. Every time you give. Whatever amount you give. Your contributions help ensure that children in our district don’t miss out on important educational opportunities, which otherwise might not be available due to budget restrictions across the state.

A child's education is important - to the kids, to their parents, to the community and yes, to the Foundation. Every year we combine the efforts, energy and contributions of community and corporate partners to ensure the best for the public school children of El Segundo. Take a look at everything your gifts are providing this year...

ESEF Dedicates Classroom in Memory of Señor Frank Real

Ask the question, and most students can tell you in a second who their favorite teacher is. Such teachers are known for demonstrating a true interest in the minds and hearts of their students and investing their energy to discover creative ways to help children learn and succeed in their education.

One such teacher was remembered and memorialized at El Segundo High School in May. Señor Frank Real taught Spanish at the high school from 1946-1983, and he had such an impact during his career that one of his students, Duane Conover - Class of 1955, decided this year to dedicate a classroom in his memory.

Spring ’08 Events: Something for Everyone

The ESEF had something for everyone this spring. From GivElSegundo, our biennial event, to the "Strokes of Genius" golf tournament, and finally the Car Show, which just wrapped up on the last day of May, everyone's been busy all around town. Whether it's sipping a glass of wine, aiming for a hole-in-one (or two... or even par would be just fine!), or enjoying a day at

the Car Show, our thanks go out to each of our donors and friends who sponsored, gave, and participated in our spring 2008 events. Remember, it's all for the kids!
AVID: Helping Kids Succeed

One important component of the Foundation’s annual grant to the ESUSD provides practical skill-building opportunities for "kids in the middle" who might not otherwise go to college. Each year eligible eighth graders in the District (with GPAs between 2.0 and 3.5) are invited to apply. Following an application and interview process, 37 students are selected to participate.

Through additional support, encouragement, and creative

teaching strategies, students participating in AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, are demonstrating increased confidence in their school work and are more willing to communicate to their teachers when they need a little extra help.

A program of the California Department of Education, the high school's AVID program received its official certification in May. However, only Title I schools receive state funding for AVID. Since ESHS is not a Title I school, funding must be obtained through another source. The District and the high school provide certain classroom supplies, but a significant portion of the AVID program is funded entirely through your gifts to the Foundation.
