Parents Make Sure ESUSD Schools Get a Boost!
Congratulations! Every school in the El Segundo Unified School District can celebrate after meeting and exceeding ESEF's Boost Your School! challenge, which wrapped up in March. Announced in January, the goal for Boost Your School was to increase participation and awareness among the 2,200 families whose children are students in the District by encouraging every stake-holder to become involved in the ESEF's $500,000 fundraising effort for the 2006-2007 school year.
Richmond Street Elementary was the first school in the District to qualify for a $2,500 cash grant in mid-February for reaching an astounding 71 percent family participation, |

based on donations of $25 or more to the ESEF. At the end of the Boost Your School! challenge, the high school achieved 25 percent family participation and the middle school achieved just over 26 percent, earning both schools a $1,000 grant. Center Street Elementary reached more than 61 percent family participation and Richmond Street Elementary finished with an impressive 91 percent, earning both schools a $2,500 grant.

The principals submitted their Boost Wish Lists earlier this year. Some of their sought-after items included a refurbished scoreboard for ESHS, a pottery wheel for art classes at the middle school, new software for the computer labs at Center Street and upgrades to the playground at Richmond Street. Schools will receive their grants in time to be used this spring to purchase items on their wish lists.
"The Foundation has traditionally received significant support from local corporations who sign on as Corporate Partners. The Boost Your School! campaign helped us not only increase our base of support from our school community, but also shows our |
corporate donors that families and community members have a strong commitment and a vested interest in advancing our schools." said Christine Sherrill, the Foundation's Community Giving Committee Chairman.
"Let's face it. There's no way to predict an end to the state's education funding crisis. The windfall of education funding recently reported in the news will barely make a dent in the scores of California schools that are struggling to meet federal requirements for No Child Left Behind," Sherrill said. "State funding has diminished for high performing schools like those in the ESUSD, making grants from the ESEF even more essential to our students, providing funds to maintain their writing, art, music, PE, robotics and technology programs."
Sherrill said the way to ensure this generation of El Segundo students doesn't miss out on the education they deserve and the community expects them to have is to ensure there will be enough money to continue the very programs that have made them among the top-ranked scholars in California.
Many thanks to every family member who contributed to the Boost Your School! campaign. Every donation helped our schools achieve their target goal and earn a grant from the Foundation. On-going wide-spread support from El Segundo's generous business and residential communities will enable the Foundation to continue its efforts to enhance the education of every ESUSD student in this and future generations.
