Going Green this Spring
No matter where you live or what you do, you’ve heard the buzz about “Going Green.” With the launch of Delta Zeta’s Pink Goes Green program in February, we found out just how many of you have already “gone green” and were joined by hundreds more who took the “Pink Goes Green” pledge. Through Pink Goes Green, the first environmental initiative of its kind in the Greek world, Delta Zeta members work at the grassroots level to improve the environment, educate the public on what they can do and help them do it, and empower those they impact with the knowledge that just one person can make a difference and enrich our planet.
Here are a few ideas to get you started, or to start a conversation with your friends or family. For more information, visit the Pink Goes Green website at www.dzpinkgoesgreen.org.
Grow A Garden.
A garden provides flowers, vegetables, and helps reduce soil erosion and air pollution.
Have A "Green" Picnic.
Recycle the newspaper to start a fire instead of using lighter fluid. Use plates, utensils and cups that can be washed and used again. Take your trash home and recycle it.
Insulate Your Home.
Proper insulation can save you tons. Your local hardware-store sales person can help you determine how much the improvements will cost, how much energy they will save, and how much money your family will save in reduced energy bills.
Make Scratch Pads.
When you use a piece of paper on only one side, don't throw it away – cut it up and use for scrap paper.
Bike Instead Of Ride.
Riding your bike instead of riding in a car saves energy and reduces pollution, of course. But it is also fun and provides great exercise! That makes it a double benefit.
Close The Refrigerator Door.
By leaving it open for just a few extra seconds, you waste a lot of energy. Decide what you want before you open the refrigerator door. Then get it and close the door right away.
Feed The Birds.
Feeding birds not only brings a bit of nature to your backyard, it also helps rid the yard of many kinds of bugs. You might have fun learning to identify the various types of birds, too.
Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup takes place from March 1 through May 31. It is the nation’s largest community improvement program with over 2.8 million volunteers providing more than 7.7 million hours in 2007 to clean, beautify and improve communities in each of our 50 states. Activities include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers and more.
